Smoothed Dynamics of Highly Oscillatory Hamiltonian Systems

چکیده

We consider the numerical treatment of Hamiltonian systems that contain a potential which grows large when the system deviates from the equilibrium value of the potential. Such systems arise, e.g., in molecular dynamics simulations and the spatial discretization of Ha-miltonian partial diierential equations. Since the presence of highly oscillatory terms in the solutions forces any explicit integrator to use very small step-size, the numerical integration of such systems provides a challenging task. It has been suggested before to replace the strong potential by a holonomic constraint that forces the solutions to stay at the equilibrium value of the potential. This approach has, e.g., been successfully applied to the bond stretching in molecular dynamics simulations. In other cases, such as the bond-angle bending, this methods fails due to the introduced rigidity. Here we give a careful analysis of the analytical problem by means of a smoothing operator. This will lead us to the notion of the smoothed dynamics of a highly oscillatory Hamiltonian system. Based on our analysis, we suggest a new constrained formulation that maintains the exibility of the system while at the same time suppressing the high-frequency components in the solutions and thus allowing for larger time steps. The new constrained formulation is Hamiltonian and can be discretized by the well-known SHAKE method.

Quantum - Classical Molecular Dynamics

We study time integration methods for equations of mixed quantum-classical molecular dynamics in which Newtonian equations of motion and Schrr odinger equations are nonlinearly coupled. Such systems exhibit diierent time scales in the classical and the quantum evolution, and the solutions are typically highly oscillatory. The numerical methods use the exponential of the quantum Hamiltonian whos...

Exact and Non-stiff Sampling of Highly Oscillatory Systems: an Implicit Mass-matrix Penalization Approach

We propose and analyze an implicit mass-matrix penalization (IMMP) technique which enables efficient and exact sampling of the (Boltzmann/Gibbs) canonical distribution associated with highly oscillatory systems. The penalization is based on an extended Hamiltonian whith artificial constraints associated with each expected fast degree of freedom (fDOF). The penalty parameters enable arbitrary tu...

Numerical Integrators for Highly Oscillatory Hamiltonian Systems: A Review

Numerical methods for oscillatory, multi-scale Hamiltonian systems are reviewed. The construction principles are described, and the algorithmic and analytical distinction between problems with nearly constant high frequencies and with timeor state-dependent frequencies is emphasized. Trigonometric integrators for the first case and adiabatic integrators for the second case are discussed in more...
